Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon Eschewing intricate detail and playful quirks, the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon ($6,700 CDN) grabs attention thanks to its minimalist design and the unique construction of its case. Forged carbon appears to be the material of the mo- ment. Brands like Tissot, Doxa, Victorinox and others have all given the extremely tough and lightweight material a chance and, with its ties to the aviation industry, it makes sense that Longines would too. Strangely though, they didn’t do so with a pilot's watch. The Ultra-Chron line is a heritage dive watch model for Longines, tracing its roots back to the late 1960s and given new life in 2022. This time around, the Ultra- Chron goes neo-vintage instead of the full old-school approach of its stainless steel linemates. The forged carbon case is large at 43mm, but thanks to its construction and titanium crown and case- back, measures in at a mere 80 grams – which is less than half of the weight of the steel version. The use of forged carbon also ensures that every case creat- ed has a unique pattern to it. The irregularity of the strand and epoxy construction all but ensures this, so each model is kind of bespoke, which earns bragging rights as far as we’re concerned. Powering the Ultra-Chron is Longines’ exclusive L836 automatic movement. Beating at 5 Hz, or 36,000 VpH, the sweep of the seconds hand is visually smoother (most calibers clip along at 4 Hz and have a slightly more pronounced pause between seconds). The L836 employs a silicon balance spring, an antimagnet- ic escape wheel and anchor. The Ultra-Chron is also chronometer-certified through independent testing at TIMELAB. Mi
